Shaft seals are used in turbomachinery or process plants to seal aggressive or environmentally incompatible gases or liquids. A seal leakage of 3 to 9% of the mass flow rate of a turbomachine can significantly impair the function and efficiency of these machine elements. The effects of the various operating conditions and influencing parameters on the sealing behavior are currently not sufficiently quantifiable. Various influencing factors from the fields of tribology and gas dynamics play an important role here, taking into account the fluid-structure interaction. The aim of this project is therefore to generate a better understanding of the prediction and control of leakage. The models developed in the project will be validated experimentally in pilot plant tests. The project is a cooperation with the company EagleBurgmann Espey GmbH in Moers.
