The interplay between research and application forms the motivation for our own work and is also the basis for technology transfer into practice. This guiding principle underlies all research projects at the Institute, which are financed in roughly equal parts by the state budget, industrial partners and other public sponsors such as the German Research Foundation.

The structure of the Institute of Engineering Mechanics provides for a division of the work into the fields of solid mechanics and fluid mechanics. These two areas represent a rare combination of the above sub-disciplines at universities under the umbrella of one institute. This constellation provides a natural starting point for the definition of interesting research topics in which competencies from the field of classical engineering mechanics, i.e. statics, dynamics and elasticity theory as well as the dynamics of the movement of liquids and gases are required. In particular, the focus is on the consideration of non-linearities that occur between the action on solids and liquids and the resulting response. Numerical simulation methods for predicting such processes require the modeling of physical processes based on experimental investigations. One example is the interaction between the movement of fluids with deformation and vibration in elastic structures.
